Thank you everyone for the following donations for March and April 2008. The amounts below came through the website, and are in addition to the $350 from the Andrea and Michael Banks Nature Fund and $5000 from the Alexander Abraham Foundation that we received in March & April. March Donations Cherish W $40, Anonymous $100, Maximilian H $20, Pirjo I $20, Anonymous $25, KARNUM S $100, Beth A $35, Noah McC $100, Anthony G $15, Pirjo I $30. April Donations David R $50, Pirjo I $20, KARNUM S $100, Noah McC $100, Anthony G $15, Pirjo I $30. It costs $690 to keep Ishango going - as I know I have said many times before. Godefroid Wambale is now receiving $150/month from donations, and I continue to receive my $150/month while at Lulimbi. This means that between Godefroid and myself we need to raise $840/month now. Thank you sincerely for all your continued support.
I last posted about the Museya patrol post construction about 3 weeks ago. Now it is almost done which is very impressive considering how isolated we are. The materials must travel far along bumpy roads. Some materials, for example bricks with holes in for ventilation, have to be flown, brick by brick, from Goma to Beni to then be transported by road for several hours. We are very grateful to the European Union for funding this via WWF. I would also like to extend a special thanks to The Andrea and Michael Banks Nature Fund. WildlifeDirect has just told me that Andrea and Michael have sent a check for $360 to fund the conservation work at Ishango. This amount is what I am still missing on a monthly basis to reach the $690 monthly target - ie the amount that keeps Ishango going. Thank you Andrea & Michael for this.
Thank you everyone! Anthony G $15

Thank you Linda at G4G and Simon at Maushausoptiks for the donation of binoculars. Samantha brought them to Ishango last weekend. We received 6 pairs in total, and this will greatly help our work on patrol. As you know Ishango and the surrounding area is savannah - so lots of vast open space we need to keep an eye on. Asanti Sana!
Testing! Rangers always sign when they receive equipment

Here is holiday message from me. Thank You All & Happy Christmas! Atamato
Til 2008! From Samantha: I am going on holiday to the UK until early January. As you know I work with Atamato to do his blog and get your donations to him. Thank you for your amazing support over this last year, and I look forward to the next year to see what we can all learn, achieve, and enjoy together. See you on the blog in the New Year! Samantha
This is Samantha. I just wanted to give a quick donation update for the last 2 weeks of November for Atamato’s work. Remember I blogged about all the donations to date and what it costs to keep Ishango going - $690 per month - at the end of November.
So here are the donations from 14-30 November: Single Donations: David R - $60 Monthly Donations: Anthony G - $15; Wim H - $100; Noah M - $100; Sharlene M - $20
With the $50 and $40 donations from Karnum and Cherish in the first two weeks of November, this brings the November total to: $385. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Now I need to work on hitting that monthly $690 target!
Samantha
This is Samantha.
So this is what is costs, at the moment, to keep Ishango going, on a monthly basis:
100 liters of fuel for patrols (1 liter costs $1.3) - $130 Patrol rations - $185 5 Ranger salary supplements - $150 Atamato’s salary supplement - $150 Maintenance of Ishango station & outboard motor - $75 Total: $690
This is essentially what I have blogged about in the past when talking about your donations - taking rations, fuel, salary supplements etc. We call them salary supplements as opposed to salaries for legal reasons.
And here is a breakdown of donations: From Feb to end-Sep: Open donations & subscriptions: $3557.02 First Aid Kits: $243.50 Fuel for Patrols: $98.00 Uniform for Rangers: $44.07 Patrol Rations: $43.47 Total Feb - end Sep: $3,986.06
Then in October Atamato received: Single Donations: Antonio C $70; David R $60; Gregory S $20; Yannic Y $100. Monthly Donations: Anthony G $15; Cherish W $40; Noah M $100; Sharlene M $20. Total October: $425 And finally, in the first 2 weeks of November, Atamato received: $50 from Karnum S (Single Donation) and $40 from Cherish W (Monthly Donation). All the work currently being carried out in Ishango is done with YOUR DONATIONS. So I really cannot stress how important they are. If donations stop, so does the work. We have come a very long way since mid-June, but still need to go further.
The way we manage this money is that you make your donation through Paypal. This goes then to a bank account in the US that is managed by WildlifeDirect. Then this money is sent to DR Congo. For Atamato’s blog donations we are able to bulk them in with our own core funds (remember we are funded by the EU which is why we don’t take a cut of donations in the first place), so that we keep the bank transfer fees low.
But the bottom line is that we still do not have enough donations. We need to be hitting that $690 figure on a monthly basis. So far we have $175 in monthly donations - and then this is supplemented with single donations, as you can see for the October figure. Atamato’s goal - and mine - is to reach this monthly target of $690. Once this has been achieved we will set yet another goal - to expand the work, increase the patrols, and improve the protection of Ishango and the wildlife. I know you all agree with me that this is a magical place. Atamato has a true vocation to protect the hippos, antelope, buffaloes and other animals. Join me to support this dedication. Samantha
This is Samantha. On 29th October I posted about the road to Ishango - the road I traveled to pay salaries to Atamato and the other Rangers.
This is all possible thanks to your donations. The patrol rations, the salaries, the patrol fuel… everything is done with donations from this blog. I hate to flog a dead horse - but this is really why it is important that everyone keeps donating.
So first I paid Atamato.
He gets $150 per month.
Then I gave money to Atamato for maintenance of the outboard motor on the boat ($25) and maintenance of the patrol post grounds ($50), eg grass cutting, clearing the air strip (this is crucial for them as they are so remote). This is also monthly.
Then I paid the 5 Rangers there - they get $30 a month each. Thank you very, very much. Samantha
